S/V Adagio - Jeff and Jane from Portland on their Passport 40. I met them in Eureka and we realized we had common friends on Sonsie. Jeff helped Mike solve the VHF radio transmission problem. Mike met them in Cuyler Harbor weeks later. We spent some time with them in Oxnard; they taught us how to play Mexican Train Dominoes; and on Catalina Island also. They arrived at the Shelter Island police docks in San Diego just before we left. (I know the police docks sounds like you are in trouble, but they are public docks managed by the harbor patrol.) - March 2008 - We last talked with them when they were headed north, past Barra Navidad, on their way to the Sea of Cortez; will leave their boat on the hard somewhere and go back home for the summer. S/V Hannah - Steve, Tracy, and Nolan (14 year old son who I just realized has the same birthdate as mine, September 26) from Friday Harbor WA on their Mason 44. Met them in Emeryville, they had travelled down the Washington/Oregon/California coast with Sonsie. They were also in Santa Barbara marina for a while when we were there but headed south sooner, and are half way down the Baja Peninsula by now (12/1/07) - March 2008 - They left in mid-month headed for the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific. S/V Tasman - Tom and Diane from KIrkland, WA on their Caliber 40. This is their 2nd cruising adventure; last time (1998-2000) it was to the South Pacific, this time they will go through the Panamal Canal. We first met them in Monterey when they came by on their dinghy in the marina; they saw the Seattle WA on the boat. Later, we got a chance to visit with them in Santa Barbara, the next port we were both at. - March 2008 - They are already in Costa Rica and plan to go through the Panama Canal. S/V Solskin - Farrell and Christine from British Columbia, Canada on a large ketch. Met briefly at Santa Barbara (the laundry room usually). S/V Tender Spirit - Joan and Chuck from Alaska, Hans Christian 33. We met them in Port Townsend in August when they were outfitting their boat. We ran in to them again in Santa Barbara. - March 2008 - They are staying in Mazatlan for a while longer. June 2008 - They just arrived in La Paz, will be here a few days then heading up the sea. I think they are making the big puddle jump next year. (sailblogs) S/V Eagle Wing - Joe and Betsy, Scott - large ketch, from the northwest, Betsy graduated from Olympia High School just a few years back. We met them in Santa Barbara; Joe was working on painting a ketch at the end of the dock we were at (owned by Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). We also ran into them in Mazatlan. - March 2008 - We saw them again in Barra de Navidad, they're heading north now, to the Sea of Cortez for the summer. They'll put the boat on the hard for a few months and go back to the northwest to work for a few months, and then pick up where they left off next fall. S/V ?? (forgot to write down the names) couple from Poulsbo with two children on board (boy and a girl) on a 40+ Jeanneau; Monterey dock S/V Pelagic - Mike, Alisa, and Elias (13 month old son) from Alaska on their Crealock 37. We first met them in Newport, OR and ran into them in Eureka also. - March 27, 2008 - We hadn't heard or seen them in months, but today I heard Alisa on the Amigo Net this morning, they left Cabo a few days ago and are headed to the South Pacific, awesome. S/V Wind Pirate - Robert from Astoria, OR, he is single handing a Formosa 39. We met Robert in Newport, OR and we sailed south with him; until we lost him in a gale, not really, he just headed into Coos Bay to get some rest. But we haven't seen him again - Robert, are you out there? S/V Tenacious - Justin & Tiffonie, young couple from Astoria, on their sailboat. Met them in Newport, OR; they were planning on docking their boat for the winter and flying to Mexico instead.............. I looked on their website a while back, and they did indeed make the fast track to Mexico via car. S/V Just Us II - Mike and Ann on a Crealock 37 from Portland, OR. We talked with them at the restaurant at Two Harbors on Catalina Island, but when I saw their boat name, I realized I had seen their boat and even talked briefly with him at the Santa Barbara marina last week........... We saw them again in San Diego, and they moved to the Shelter Island police docks, just before we left. We saw them again in Mazatlan, and Tenacatita. They let me borrow a sewing machine in mazatlan for some canvas projects I had. March 2008 - their turnaround point for going back north was in Barra de Navidad. May 2008 - we saw them briefly in Mazatlan, they came in a few days before we were headed to La Paz. S/V Jazz - Rich is from the Portland area (I think), and is sailing his Beneteau alone. He is heading south and is just ahead of us. We first met Rich in Santa Barbara, then again in Shelter Island (San Diego), and briefly here in Ensenada. We saw him again several times down the coast of Mexico, Turtle Bay, Ensenada de Los Muertos, Mazatlan, La Cruz, and Barra de Navidad. March 2008 - he's heading back north now. S/V Chauk Chauk - Bob is sailing his Valiant 40 south to Mexico, with various crew members joining him. We first met him on a dirt road in Catalina Island, then Shelter Island in San Diego, and he sort of followed us to Ensenada, i.e. he just happened to leave the same day. Bob is from Anchorage, AK. He had a rental car at Shelter Island and gave me a ride to the laundry mat one day. Thanks Bob. We saw Bob again several times on the Baja coasts, Ensenada (he checked in the same time we did) Turtle Bay, and also on the Mexican mainland, Mazatlan (Jan), La Cruz (Feb). March 25th - he just arrived in Barra de Navidad. May 2008 - La Paz at Costa Baja Marina; Bob came in after us and left before; he was headed out to the islands, and then over to San Carlos. S/V Westerly - Steve is sailing his Westsail 39 south to Mexico alone. We met Steve in Shelter Island, but learned that he was at the Santa Barbara marina the same time he was. Steve joined the Sonsie crew and us for Thanksgiving dinner. He left Shelter Island headed south a couple days before we did. Steve is from Oakland, CA and isn't sure where he is going to go.......... so many choices. We saw Steve again many times, Turtle Bay, La Cruz, Tenacatita. March 2008 - he is in La Cruz getting a new engine installed. He was going to put his boat in the Paradise Village Marina for the summer and return to California for a few months. Stan and Heather on ?? - This was one of the few boats we met headed north from Mexico. Stan had a car in Shelter Island and gave me a ride to Costco one day. Thanks Stan. Shari (sp?) and Steve on Demeris (?) - a trimaran from San Francisco headed south. We first met them at the Catalina Harbor anchorage and also at the Shelter Island docks. S/V Orinoco - Jim is single handling his Amazon sailboat. The last we heard, he and Westerly were going to travel from Cabo to Mazatlan around Christmas. March 2008 - we heard a while back that he was well on his way to Panama, to go through the canal. S/V Oya - Craig and Kiki - a Beneteau 470; we met them at the Gigglin Marlin Restaurant in Ensenada de Los Muertos on 12/23. They left for Mazatlan on the 24th; maybe we'll see them again. March 2008 - we did see them again in Los Hadas, the day Sonsie was leaving for the South Pacific. May 2008 - We got to spend some time with Craig & Kiki in Mazatlan, and again in La Paz before they left their boat for the summer, and headed home to northern California in their RV. We had several enjoyable dinners with them, saw the new Indiana Jones movie, and Kiki and I went to a day spa to get spoiled one day. I'm going to miss them................. S/V Hanalei - Ron - we met Ron at Ensenada de Los Muertos but we'd heard about him a month or so ago. The Coast Guard was looking for him because he hadn't 'reported in' with his daughter. All was well, just a communication problem. He left for La Paz on Dec. 26th. We heard in late May 2008 that in February he lost his boat when he crashed into some rocks near Aqua Verde in the Sea of Cortez. He's safe but is not sailing now. M/V Panchita - Ted and Joan - we first met them in Magdalena Bay; chatted with them on the way to Cabo, saw them in Mazatlan, then again in San Blas. We had dinner with them in Chacala, La Cruz, and again in Barra de Navidad. March 2008 - they headed back north for the summer. Late May 2008 -when we arrived in La Paz at the Costa Baja Marina, Panchita was here, but they were not. They left for a while for some family activities back in the states, but fortunately they came back before we left. We had a couple of enjoyable dinners with them. They had an article about them published in the Latitudes and Attitudes magazine, the February 2008 issue. S/V Tupo - Eric and Janet - Vancouver 27; we met them in San Blas and again in Chacala. We saw them again in La Cruz. March 2008 - I received an email from them that they took the boat to Mazatlan to put it up for sale; their adventure was coming to an end. S/V Espiritu - Pat & Carol - Hunter 490; ran into them in Chacala, they were in Mazatlan when we were. S/V Second Wind - Melissa & Cory on their Beneateau 331; first met them in Chacala in late January 2008. They were a very nice young couple, as compared to the rest of us old folks they were young, 30's? Anyway, we saw them again in Barra de Navidad in March 2008. May 2008 - they were 'bashing' their boat up the west coast of Baja headed back to southern California and they were waiting in Turtle Bay for a storm to pass. S/V Simple Pleasures - Bernard, Martine, and Anne; we met Martine and Anne in San Diego from a different boat. We had dinner with them in Cabo San Lucas. They found Bernard and Simple Pleasures in La Paz and are heading for Puerta Vallarta from Ensenada de Los Muertos, when the weather permits. March 2008 - they (Bernard & Anne) were here in Barra de Navidad when we arrived but left a few days later heading back north. S/V Anya - Norman and his Vancouver 27; we first met Norm briefly in Marina Mazatlan in January 2008. We saw him again in Barra de Navidad in March, and then in La Cruz and Mazatlan (May). June 2008 - Norman is in Canada now (much cooler) and will soon be off lollygagging in the Mediterranean, contemplating buying a boat there to do some cruising on. S/V Java (catamaran) - We met Evan at Barra de Navidad in early March, 2008; he is sailing south to Ecuador also. He is a licensed massage therapist and I got a massage from him a couple weeks ago, wonderful. We saw Evan again in La Paz, he was delivering a Hunter sailboat to Manzanillo in late May 2008. S/V Freestyle - Tim and Jenna, we met them in Tenacatita and got a chance to visit with them some in Barra de Navidad; we also looked them up when we were near Puerto Vallarta and had a great visit with them. They are staying in Paradise Village for the summer, at least their boat is, a Cape George 36. They are going to a home in Maine for the summer. S/V Lost Soul - Paul and Jenny (?) S/V Farfetched - Bruce and Steve (brothers) - Bruce is the guy who brought the new AIS system to us (the one Sonsie ordered but it didn't get here in time for them) at Barra de Navidad S/V Phoenix - Brian - we first met at La Cruz and later saw him at Barra de Navidad; Brian wrote an article for 48 North when his previous sailboat went up in flames in the Sea of Cortez last year, yikes; he didn't give up. S/V Aztec - David and Carolyn - we met them in Barra de Navidad lagoon; their boat drug anchor right in front of us int he lagoon, fortunately thanks to Rod, Mike and other cruisers, they didn't hit us. Very nice couple. S/V Raven - Scott & Cheryl - we met them in Barra de Navidad in March 2008; they bought most of our Garmin chips that we weren't going to use afterall. M/V Mystic Moon - Kathy & John - our friends on Panchita introduced us to these guys when we were in Barra de Navidad. They invited us up to the 10th floor pool at the Grand Bay Hotel and we had a nice visit. We later ran into them at the Costa Baja Marina in La Paz where their boat is staying for the summer. May 2008 - They had a 'dinner boat party' in late May, what a beautiful boat and they were a great host/hostess. They bought all the Central America flags that we had, we didn't need them afterall. S/V Triple Stars - Rob & Jan on their Island Packet 380; we met them in Barra de Navidad in March 2008. We had plans to meet up with them again our trips south, but since we decided to turn around, we missed them. June 2008 - they've made it to El Salvador and will leave their boat for a while. Later they will take it through the canal and then up the east coast to a home they have in the NE. S/V Cirque - Louis and Laura - we met them through Oya in Mazatlan in May 2008. M/V Aurora - We saw Aurora in Barra de Navidad, but never got a chance to meet them. We saw them again in La Paz. Jess & Charlene (?) are from British Columbia. As of June 2008, they plan to have their boat shipped back to the northwest in December, 2008. S/V Interlude - Peggy and Don - we saw them first in Barra de Navidad, but also never met them. May 2008 - In La Paz we were docked near them and learned they have been cruising for several years. Many others that we only talked with briefly and didn't get a chance to get their names (or at least I forgot to write them down). At Shelter Island in San Diego, the police docks were filled with cruisers, most of them headed south. We even met one woman, Martine, from Paris, who is crewing for a boat that she made arrangements with over the internet; talk about being bold and brave. She had only been with the boat for a couple of weeks so far; I hope that works out for her. She wants to do the Pacific Ocean round trip this year, and has plans for future sailing trips as well. May 2008 - I read in the Yahoo groups forum that she made it to the South Pacific and was looking for a ride to New Zealand, gird for her.
